HYDERABAD: Yadagiri, the state government's helicopter which ferried more than half a dozen chief ministers and other dignitaries for over two decades, has been sold to a Mumbai-based company for Rs 40 lakh.
The Chetak helicopter was named Yadagiri by late chief minister T Anjaiah who was the first to use it.
The government was desperately looking for buyers for the past few years after it was grounded.

Sources said the annual maintenance contract for the chopper was Rs 30 lakh, but the government used to spend 30-40 times of this cost.
Chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy was keen on disposing it at the earliest as it had become a burden on the exchequer.
Government sources told the Sunday Times of India that the helicopter was purchased in 1979 for about Rs 65 lakh and was used by Anjaiah, Marri Chenna Reddy, Kotla Vijayabhaskara Reddy, N Janardhan Reddy, N T Rama Rao and Chandrababu Naidu over the last 23 years.
It was the state's main carrier for chief ministers until the Chandrababu Naidu government purchased a Bell chopper a few years ago.
Moreover, in the changed security scenario, authorities declared Yadagiri unfit for flying as it has a single engine and rules say that VVIPs should never travel by a single-engine chopper.

The aircraft also required refuelling after every 350-400 km of flying. But, by and large, it was problem-free and was even used by the police department in emergencies.
There were also proposals in the past to lend the chopper on hire for film shootings but the idea was dropped to prevent further wear and tear.
While the chief ministers in the past never used to make long journeys on helicopters, the current Bell carrier is air-conditioned, twin-engined, sound proof and has night landing facility.
The government had issued a tender inviting buyers for Yadagiri and after a couple of them backed out, it accepted a Mumbai-based company's bid for Rs 40 lakh.
Meanwhile, the government has no further plans to buy another chopper as the maintenance cost is said to be too high.
